Name: Kurogane

Fandom: Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle

History link: http://tsubasa.wikia.com/wiki/Kurogane (This is the Kurogane page on the Tsubasa fan-wiki – the best sources for his history come under the “background,” “early life,” and “story” sections.)

Age: While no age is ever given for Kurogane, his looks and personality lead most to agree that he is in his early twenties, somewhere around 23 or 24. Mature enough to be a paternal figure to the children in his party, but young enough that he still has his own lessons to learn.

Canon point: I will be taking Kurogane from the land of Japan – he has just sacrificed his arm in order to rescue one of his companions, a magician named Fai D. Flourite, from the destruction of the world of Celes. He and his companions are recuperating in the world he was born in, and he has just been fitted with a robotic arm, which Fai bargained for him while he was unconscious. Their relationship, tense up until this point, has finally mended – his selfless act has convinced Fai to value his own life as much as those around him do.

Personality: Kurogane is a rather grouchy, serious individual - he's usually frowning or glowering, rather than anything else. He is also quick to anger and bristles easily when teased. (Because of how easy it is to get to him, two of his companions, Mokona and Fai, constantly tease him and pester him with infuriatingly adorable nicknames.)

Kurogane is a ninja, and absolutely loves a good fight - he's very competitive, and when he does smile, more than half the time its at the prospect of a challenging battle or test. He's a ruthless and skilled fighter, and possesses many of the traits one would expect from a professional warrior. He is extremely perceptive and observant - he notices not only small changes and charactaristics in his environments, but in people as well. Because he doesn't feel the need to express everything he notices right as he notices it, he can sometimes seem impulsive or mean when he finally does address things - but he always has a reason for doing what he does, even if he can't or won't explain it.

Kuro is a man of few words, and doesn't always deem it necessary to say what he's thinking or feeling - he tends to commnunicate his feelings more through actions. When he does decide he needs to talk about them, he picks his words carefully, and doesn't repeat himself - he knows you heard him, so once is enough.

Though he is a gruff man, beneath his tough and spikey exterior lies a good and compassionate heart. He will do anything to protect the people he cares about, more so as the series progresses and he learns what it means to be trully strong. The moment he cuts off his own arm to save Fai, without any hesitation, is a perfect example of the selflessness he displays when it comes to saving those that are dear to him, and marks a turning point in his development as he realizes that power doesn't always mean strength. (Power alone could not have saved the magician, and there are some things that physical force can't defeat - Tomoyo, the princess of his world, had sent him on his journey to learn this exact lesson.)

Powers/Abilities: As I mentioned before, Kurogane is a ninja and a professional warrior - he is easily the most skilled fighter in his group, and primarily uses a sword in battle. (Though he wouldn't be helpless without one, by any means.) As a seasoned warrior, he possesses speed, strength, and endurance that go far beyond a normal person's - but these are the result of training, and not any superhuman power.

As a ninja, he has also honed his senses to allow him to move around inthe dark without issue, and to be able to sense, and fight, people and things around him with his eyes closed - this is something he begins teaching Syaoran on their journey, after noticing that the young man is blind in one eye. He also teaches the boy swordsmanship, and the two of them acquire swords with magical powers early on in the series. (However, I am taking him from a point after which he loses this sword, along with his arm, which had been enchanted by Fai to carry the weapon within it - he will now have Ginryuu, his father's sword, which Tomoyo gives him after he arrives in Japan.)

Lastly, he has been fitted with a robotic arm, as a replacment for the one he cut off in Celes - while the arm doesn't seem to have more power than his normal limbs, it is definitely worth noting, as it is not a natural part of him. At the point I'm taking him from, it is fitting rather poorly and tends to cause him a good deal of pain.

Prose sample:

The room had been dark for several hours, and quiet for two of those, save for the sound of his companions' steady, slumbering breaths. He could see their forms tucked into the single bed, illuminated by the moonlight seeping in through the window – not that he would have needed it to sense that they were there. In fact, until a moment ago, his own eyes had been closed, and he had been as asleep as a good warrior could afford to be – resting, but ready to face an attack at a moment's notice.

He sat in a corner of the room, where the window and doorway were clearly visible, with his sword held against him, resting against his shoulder – a position he assumed often when it came time to sleep, no matter how hospitable their environment may be. He hadn't even considered a spot on the bed, though it likely wasn't big enough to hold him along with everyone else – and he was more comfortable this way, anyway.

It wasn't rare for him to wake up several times throughout the night, and so long as it wasn't something suspicious or sudden that roused him, he had no reason to tense. This time was no different, and in fact, the dull ache where his left shoulder met his new arm gave him a good idea of why he was now looking at the moonlit space and not the backs of his eyelids. The pain was what woke him, he knew... but the itch, the sense of anticipation at the coming confrontation - at the idea of how close they were to finally killing the man responsible for everything -...that was what kept him awake.

And he'd stayed that way.

His deep, red gaze only shifted when a shadow on the bed did – the motion, the shuffled noise that accompanied it, and the change in a familiar breathing pattern's rhythm was enough to tell the ninja that it was the magician. Awake, like him. He waited as the other man approached him, acknowledging him with a short nod and watching him fold his lithe body into a sitting position on a chair nearby. It was Fai who spoke first...but then, it usually was.

“Couldn't sleep?”

“Not really.” shrugged, not allowing so much as a flinch on his face as the movement caused a sharper pain to cut through the ache in his shoulder. Whether or not he had someone watching him, he wouldn't have let a reaction show – he'd been through worse than this, and probably still would. Instead, he turned his attention to the blonde's face, reading that single golden eye, seeing a sincerity in that soft, and always teasing, smile...something he still wasn't quite used to.

“Is it still your arm?” The man prodded in that gentle tenor voice of his. Kurogane looked away and shrugged again – last time he'd tried to lie about it, Fai had mercilessly tested his honesty by smacking his wounded shoulder, and he wouldn't be made a hypocrite again. At least silence wasn't pretending it didn't hurt.

“I can smell the blood, you know.” Came the wheedling confirmation, though the phrasing of it was enough to bring his eyes back to the mage's face – there wasn't a desperate thirst there, no evidence that he was keeping a pained expression from breaking through...none of the tight falseness in his features that Kurogane remembered well from the worlds after Acid Tokyo. Still...if the vampire had noticed the scent, he'd no doubt be hungry for what it promised, even if it was just a taste. He held eye contact for a moment longer before he leaned back, slipping his sword out of its sheath by just a few inches – exposing just as much of the blade as it would take to slice through a small patch of skin he would drag across it.

“Don't.” Suddenly the smaller man was in front of him, that pale hand keeping him from bringing his wrist up to the sharp edge. The gesture made him look up at the other again, eyes widening for at least a second in what was his version of surprise – though they'd done it this way god knows how many times, his companion was stopping him now...and he saw nothing in the gaze of that single eye except concern. A small smirk quirked his lips as a thought occured to him – this, along with everything else in the past day, proved that this was a “new” Fai. One that understood how those around him could care for him...one who no longer resented him for saving his life by turning him into what he was now.

But the ninja couldn't help but want to test it even more.

“Fine. I won't. You do it.” Prove to me that you understand why your life is worth supporting, his eyes spoke, half the challenge presented in that meaningul look. In return, he recieved a surprised blink, and another one of those real smiles as the magician brought his strong wrist upwards, closer to his lips. He opened his mouth slighly, revealing those sharp fangs and pressing them against his skin, one eye dancing before he bit. Challenge accepted.

“If you say so, Kuropii~”
